Ahmed Faraz | The Legend Lives

ahmed_farazI am one of those people who found out that there was a Pakistani poet known as “Faraz” when I first received a text message with a joke with his name in it. And I am sure I wasn’t the only one to have learned about him through our good old texting service.

Apnasystem.com has given me the opportunity to express my views on the subject matter of Mr. Ahmed Faraz.

He was one of the most famous poets of Pakistan — a legend, a legend that was even mourned in India. Click here to view their report. (http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/India/Pak_poet_Ahmed_Faraz_dies_at_77/articleshow/3409068.cms)

This poet was not just a famous poet, but a well versed poet who had a lot of national and international achievements, and to top it all, he received awards from our neighboring country. . These included:

National Awards

  • Adamji Award (Pakistan’s highest literary award), 1966
  • Abaseen Award, 1970
  • Dhanak Award, 1971
  • Dr. Muhammad Iqbal Award, 1991
  • Naqoosh-e-Adab Award, 1992-93
  • Sitara-i-Imtiaz, 1993
  • Kamal-e-Fan Award, 1994
  • Pakistan Academy of Letters Award, 2000
  • Hilal-e-Imtiaz, 2004 (returned in 2006)

International Awards

  • Firaq International Award (India), 1982
  • Academy of Urdu Literature Award (Canada), 1991
  • JN Tata Award (India), 1992
  • 2000 Millennium Medal of Honors (USA), 1999
  • First Kafi Azmi Award (UAE), 2002
  • ETV Kamal-e-Fan Award (India), 2004

Now this is something a Pakistani should be proud of, a legend who has been awarded in major countries of the world. And what is the more recent award he got for his contribution, text messages.

Ironically, our government is keen enough to arrest people who text, well deserved messages, for the political people who are screwing the nation while a person who promoted the nation is being screwed, the government doesn’t care.

Do we see any current leader of the country today who had such awards? Though they may be for literature or not concerned with politics, but he earned respect, which we all know our leaders haven’t.

I don’t understand why do we make fun of him. What is the amusement we get from sending messages about Faraz.

Every day you get new and new messages about Faraz, some are funny (not saying I don’t laugh at them or something) but come on, give it up already, let him rest in peace.

Indirectly it’s “gheebat”, making fun of him behind his back, why don’t you ever put your name in it, or your brothers or any relative, your parents anyone whosoever that is close to you- Because you know it deep down inside that it’ll be made fun of.

I know I have said very little to help him, but I would like all you educated people out there to help stop this nonsense. At least, maybe if we can’t stop forwarding jokes, we can still filter out Faraz Jokes until they actually finish.

As far as tasdeeq is concerned as suggested by Adeel Mazhar, it is indeed a proper way of doing things. However in this case we can take some clue from the award given by India, enemy of Pakistan and Islam.
